‘A Man Who Will Be Deeply Missed’: Meg Ryan Shares Moving Homage to Director Rob Reiner

Meg Ryan has posted a tribute to the departed director Rob Reiner, who was her director in the iconic romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally.

A Devastating Incident

Reiner was located lifeless with his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, at their residence in LA this past weekend.

“We will miss this man so deeply…” Ryan wrote on Instagram, accompanying a photo of them together. “Thank you, Rob and Michelle [sic], for the way you believe in true love, in fairy tales, and in laughter. Your trust in people's goodness and your love for this nation are remembered.”

Charges Filed

Reiner’s son Nick, 32, is accused of two counts of first-degree murder and was in court today. He’s being held without bail. Sources state that Reiner’s daughter Romy discovered her father deceased.

“I have to believe that their story will not end with this impossible tragedy, that some good may come, some awareness raised,” Ryan went on to write. “I don’t know, but my guess is that they would want that to be hopeful and humane, to be something that brings us all to a greater understanding of one another and to some peace.”

A Statement from Siblings

Reiner’s surviving children Jake and Romy released a message today. “Language fails to capture the daily agony we endure,” they said. “The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. Beyond being our mom and dad, they were our dearest friends.”

Hollywood Tributes Pour In

Ryan’s co-star, Billy Crystal, joined in remembering Reiner with a statement shared yesterday together with remarks by Larry David, Martin Short and Albert Brooks.

“His comedic touch was beyond compare, his love of getting the music of the dialogue just right, and his sharpening of the edge of a drama was simply elegant,” the tribute noted. “He adored his actors. He elevated his writers. His greatest gift was freedom. If you had an idea, he listened, he brought you into the process. Everyone felt like part of a crew. His direction was a gift, but his legacy is broader.”

A Storied Career

When Harry Met Sally was a box office and critical triumph in 1989, grossing more than $93 million worldwide and securing Nora Ephron an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.

Rob Reiner first encountered Michele Singer Reiner whilst filming When Harry Met Sally. The pair were introduced by Barry Sonnenfeld, a fellow filmmaker and pal.

Reiner’s celebrated filmography comprised classics such as Misery, Stand by Me and The Princess Bride. The director and his wife were husband and wife for over three decades.
