While perhaps not at the same level as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the county's top official had her own presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the onset of a second term in office.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a long and happy life free from concern.”
The event, simultaneously observing and challenging the local cultural practice of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “6-7” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The trend became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently made “six-seven” its top term for the year.
This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It represents the character of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Every time, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they celebrated Six Seven’s big moment.
