American Military Conducts Lethal Attack in Pacific, Resulting in 4 Deaths

As stated by a senior military spokesperson, the US military executed a fatal strike on a boat in the Pacific Ocean, killing four individuals.

“Joint Task Force Southern Spear carried out a deadly attack on a vessel operated by a Designated Terrorist Organization in international waters. Intelligence verified the vessel was traveling along a known drug smuggling route and was engaged in illicit drug transport. All four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no American forces were harmed.”

Context and Recent Strikes

This announcement comes a day after an announcement regarding a naval blockade of all targeted oil tankers to and from Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund narcotics smuggling and other crimes, vowing to increase the military presence.

Just on Tuesday, the Pentagon said it had carried out strikes on three boats it accused of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, killing eight people. Since 2 September, more than 20 military engagements have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 individuals, most off the coast of Venezuela.

Administration Justifies Tactics Amid Scrutiny

The government has faced increasing pressure to make public video of a 2 September vessel attack. However, officials have declined to do so. The administration has defended its campaign as a successful operation, arguing it has prevented drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is stretching the limits of legal military action.

Although the administration has said the campaign is about halting drugs headed to the US, comments from a senior aide seemed to suggest a broader geopolitical aim. In a recently published interview, the chief of staff remarked the leader “aims to keep on destroying vessels until Venezuela's president surrenders or concedes.”

This suggests the military campaign may be linked to a push to remove Venezuela's current leadership.
