Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect behind a series of unforgettable images favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.

Price was best known for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, such as the pastel suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."

His passing follows less than a month after he debuted his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by the late Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he started his work in menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to blend menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in crafting body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.

Following a profession lasting half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Dramatic Impact: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a authentic original whose legacy on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
