A speeding vehicle that was evading law enforcement slammed into a crowded bar early on the weekend, killing four people and injuring 11 in a historic district of Florida, known for its nightlife and visitors.
Aerial surveillance unit with the Tampa law enforcement agency observed the vehicle driving recklessly on a freeway at approximately just after midnight after authorities said the silver sedan had been seen illegally racing in another neighborhood, according to a law enforcement announcement.
The Florida highway patrol caught up with the vehicle and tried to perform a tactic that involves striking a back panel of a fleeing car to cause it to spin out, called a pit, but it was unsuccessful.
Highway patrol personnel “ended pursuit” as the vehicle sped toward the historic Ybor City area near downtown, Tampa police said. Ultimately, the motorist lost control of the vehicle and struck more than a dozen individuals outside the bar, police confirmed.
Three individuals perished at the scene and a fourth person died at a hospital. By the next day, a fifth victim was hospitalized in critical state, and 8 additional victims were being cared for at local medical centers but were classified as stable, authorities said. 2 additional victims experienced minor harm and declined medical aid at the scene. Every one of the 15 people are grown individuals.
“What happened today was a pointless tragedy, our hearts are with the families of the victims and everyone who were impacted,” the local top law enforcement officer expressed in a message.
Officers identified the suspect as 22-year-old Silas Sampson, who was arrested on Saturday and is being detained at the local jail.
Legal records showed Sampson has been charged with 4 charges of reckless driving causing death and four counts of aggravated fleeing or eluding with serious bodily injury or fatality. All are serious crimes. No attorney was recorded for the accused.
“Our entire city is mourning the tragedy,” remarked the city’s mayor, previously served as Tampa’s initial woman top cop, in a post on social media.
“My thoughts are with the victims and families. Official inquiries into the incident is continuing, and we are working to obtain answers,” the statement added.
Lately, certain regions and local agencies have advocated to restrict the employment of high-speed car chases to protect both the public and police. Following a rise in deaths, a recent study supported by the federal authorities recommended law enforcement pursuits to be rarely used, explaining that the danger to suspects, personnel and bystanders often exceeds the immediate need to apprehend a suspect.
Still, the state has doubled down on the tactics, with the state’s highway patrol revising its guidelines to relax limitations on the application of car chases and precision techniques. The federally supported report described these strategies as “dangerous” and “debated”.
