The deceased of a 34-year-old woman and her 10-year-old daughter have been found inside freezing appliances in an apartment in the western part of Austria.

The victims, a woman from Syria and her daughter, who had been missing for several months, were detected on the end of last week. The freezers were hidden behind a plasterboard wall in the dwelling, situated in the city of Innsbruck.

Two individuals, a Austrian man, 55 and his 53-year-old brother, were arrested in the month of June. The 55-year-old, a colleague of the female victim, told law enforcement last week that there had been an accident—but disputed murder.

Speaking to journalists previously, a official for the state prosecutor said the brothers were being kept in custody on "serious suspicion of homicide".

The names of those implicated have not been disclosed by police, in compliance with national regulations.

Their going missing was originally brought to light by the woman's cousin, who resides in Germany, on July 25, 2024.

Authorities stated the male associate informed them at the time she had taken an extended trip with her child to visit her parents in the nation of Turkey.

The mother's debit card was then found to have been used overseas repeatedly.

However when officers entered the mother's apartment, her smartphone was located.

A witness also claimed hearing a loud noise in the dwelling, and shouts of "mother" on the date the pair were presumed to have gone missing.

An expanded criminal probe was launched, with investigators finding multiple communications transmitted via the mother's device—among them a notice of quitting to her employer and communications to the male colleague.

Authorities stated a significant cash transfer was also transferred to the suspect.

A senior police official told reporters on Tuesday that a rented space had been leased before the mother and child went missing and a cooling unit had been installed within.

The brothers removed the freezer from the facility on the very day the victims went missing, she said. And a week later, they purchased an additional appliance.

Officials believe they think this points to the deaths were premeditated.

"The cause of death could not be determined due to the advanced decay of the bodies," the official stated.

The prosecutor's spokesman—of the public prosecutor's office—noted the specific order of occurrences is yet to be determined, but the remains were professionally hidden and not discovered during a previous house search.

While the suspects were taken into custody in June, it was only on November 12 that the suspect confessed to an event and to hiding the bodies. He disputes any murderous intent, investigators said.

Meanwhile, his younger brother admitted to a attempt to hide evidence but disputed awareness of a homicide.

The pair are currently in detention before court proceedings in detention centers in two Austrian cities, situated at a distance.

Through a combined announcement, Austria's Minister for Women and Justice Minister declared the "alleged double murder... symbolizes the swift and cruel conclusion of two human lives and exposes a cruel system".

"Females of all ages are falling victim to homicide due to the simple reality that they are women and girls," they continued.

"Femicides are a strongly established and society-wide problem that we must fight resolutely."
