Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are going up, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
