New York state attorney general has rolled out a recent reporting form urging residents to provide images and footage of ICE operations across New York. This action follows a shortly after a significant enforcement action rattled NYC's Chinatown, sparking widespread outcry.
A lawmaker disclosed during a midweek briefing that four American citizens were taken into custody and detained for "about 24 hours" following the previous day's operation. Demonstrations erupted in NYC on consecutive evenings.
"Every New Yorker has the right to live without fear," the attorney general declared in a announcement.
"For those who saw and captured immigration enforcement recently, I urge you to share that material with my office. We are dedicated to examining these accounts and determining any wrongdoings."
The platform includes fields to send images and video footage of the raid, plus a section to specify location information. Prior to sending, individuals must mark a box that acknowledges that "authorities might employ any documents, photographs, or videos in a public document, including in a court case or public report."
The Manhattan operation, which onlookers say involved more than 50 ICE personnel, took place in a well-known neighborhood of Manhattan where counterfeit handbags, accessories, jewelry and other goods are regularly available en masse – frequently to tourists.
Videos of the operation reveal several hooded and equipped federal agents restraining and arresting a man, and forcing aside bystanders. Crowds of New Yorkers trailed the personnel through the streets. An military-style transport was noticed traveling down the urban roads.
In a midweek briefing featuring the immigrant advocacy group, congressman Dan Goldman, a lawmaker, said that four American citizens were arrested by immigration for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where four American citizens should be arrested for no reason." He noted the persons were let go on the following day with no legal action taken.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not about removing offenders," the congressman stated. "This is a militarized effort to provoke unrest. It is merely a justification to incite violence for the government to utilize the armed forces to prevent unrest that they initiated."
Fury over the ICE raid quickly spread – all three mayoral candidates criticized the incident, as did NY's governor.
"Yet again, the Trump administration chooses heavy-handed tactics that create fear, instead of protection. It needs to cease," a contender declared.
New York City community groups spoke out also.
"Immigration agents targeted the neighborhood with military-style vehicles, hooded officers and tactical gear to go after street vendors working to survive. This operation had no connection to community security and focused completely on intimidating residents and neighborhoods," said the leader of a rights organization.
Agency rules prohibits the detention of US citizens and the agency has stated it will not take into custody citizens. However, independent reporting has discovered that more than 170 citizens have been detained unlawfully by federal agents since the start of the present government.
Immigration operations have been becoming more common in New York and around the country lately.
A recent action in central NYC was the earliest reported action on an refuge facility of the existing leadership. Rallies against ICE are ubiquitous as are allegations of force and cruel conditions.
Latest, a letter submitted by legal entities claimed medical neglect of pregnant women in government custody.
