Out of every adult-oriented animated films I’ve ever viewed, nothing has stuck with me as much as the terror-laced finale of a explicitly bloody and highly provocative 2022 movie Unicorn Wars.
In 2015’s, the Spain-based writer-director created a grim, melancholy , often savage universe with some tiny , forlorn hints of hope.
While Unicorn Wars seems like it stemmed from an impulse to advance animation even more, the filmmaker explained that it was rather a try to communicate a global, cross-cultural theme concerning “the mutual source of every conflict.”
That message is communicated via a squad of brightly hued teddy bears , obviously inspired by a popular series of cuddly figures.
Being raised in a community focused on militarism as well as the defense industry, many of these creatures are obsessed with exterminating unicorns, because of a holy book which states the bears they were once masters of the forest, until the unicorns drove them out.
A few have not completely accepted the brainwashing, and prefer to try out narcotics or mate outdoors.
In contrast to their gentle counterparts, these bright beings display sexual organs and definite libidos.
For a certain notably brutal, skeptical animal, the character Bluey, the battle with the unicorns turns into a road to power — and specifically to supremacy over his gentler, nicer brother Tubby.
Bluey acts as a tormentor and an apparent psychopath , and as horror dominates his group and takes his fellow soldiers individually, he seizes more and more control personally, in increasingly bloody, damaging approaches.
Meanwhile, the unicorns are suffering their own nightmare, through an expanding, deadly beast in their habitat.
“In the early stages, it feels like a lighthearted film,” the director said. “Yet it becomes a more serious and melancholic movie. And by the end, it’s a horror film.”
The Unicorn Wars begins similar to one of the most whimsical films by a legendary filmmaker, that discover a mischievous joy in letting drawn beings curse, engage in violence, or have intimate relations.
Afterward it becomes closer to a bleaker work from that creator, with increasingly visual gore , a palpable connection to the real horror of war.
In the finale, it becomes a full-on Grand Guignol bloodbath.
The fear which makes the film a perfect Halloween viewing starts much sooner than that description suggests.
The Unicorn Wars is suited for the devoted fans of gore, for fans of extreme cinema who desire to view something they’ve never seen on-screen before, and can endure a narrative which delivers no restraint.
Watch it with the lights off without any distractions, and the finale will dig into your mind and stay with you.
