The Three Lions to Start the European Championship 2028 Quest at City’s Home Ground

The English squad will commence their 2028 European Championship campaign at the the home of Manchester City, provided that they secure the anticipated entry for a competition taking place in the bulk of Britain and the Ireland.

The Etihad Stadium has not hosted an Three Lions fixture since May 2016, when the Turkish team were defeated 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is highly likely to stage the England side for their inaugural game on Saturday 10 June 2028.

England are planned to play their concluding group fixtures at Wembley, but, in the event of winning their group, their knockout stage opener would be held at St James’ Park. Placing second would mean commencing the knockouts at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Tournament Launch and Demonstration

The championship was launched at an ceremony in Piccadilly Circus on the previous evening. High-ranking officials from European football’s governing body and the host FAs were barracked as they approached the venue by about 50 pro-Palestine demonstrators, who urged the Israeli team to be removed from the sport because of the conflict in Gaza.

Placards were displayed with slogans saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators shouted: “Kick Israel out.”

Championship Timeline

The opening game of Euro 2028 will be played at the the national stadium of Wales in Cardiff, on a Friday in June 2028, a fixture that will include Wales if they make it.

Wembley will host the penultimate rounds and the title decider, which will be played on July 9, 2028 with a kick-off time at late afternoon.

It is expected that an earlier start, which will also be adopted for Champions League finals from the following campaign, will appeal to families and help engage a more diverse set of fans.

Participating Countries

The Republic of Ireland are set to play their first game at the Dublin stadium and the Scottish team would follow suit at Hampden Park.

All four host countries’ teams will enter the qualification process; two automatic spots will be reserved for any that fail to qualify for the finals through that route.

Locations and Playoffs

Aston Villa’s stadium and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium round out the event’s nine venues. All will hold at least one elimination game, with the quarter-finals staged at each country’s national stadium.

The draw for the qualifiers will be staged in the Northern Irish capital, which was dropped as a venue city last year when it became clear Casement Park could not be upgraded in time, on 6 December 2026.
