Venus Williams, Receives Special Entry for First Melbourne Major in Half a Decade.

Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, commencing on January 18 in Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to the Australian Courts

The event organizers announced on Friday that the forty-five-year-old icon will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the early stage before exiting in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

Venus had earlier stated in the month of November her intention to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a wild card, a fortnight prior to the Australian Open. The Australian Open added that Williams is scheduled to participate in Hobart, Australia a following week, immediately prior to the start of play at Melbourne Park.

Her last appearance in the city was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 and 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in Australia and looking forward to competing during the summer season," Williams said. "I’ve had so many unforgettable moments there, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to go back to a place that has meant so much to my career."

Officials indicated that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to compete in an Open's singles competition, surpassing the mark formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she was defeated in the opening round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
