Vince Gilligan never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would become a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
With the first season of the acclaimed sci-fi show reaching its finale—and a second season greenlit and underway—the writers' room opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.
It would be easy to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and fan theories about Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.
“The experience is akin to an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it from others, and that's on purpose. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
So if the creative staff aren't taking cues by public opinion, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… sort of.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to discard a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Then again, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.
“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, why mess with the classics?
“I want Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
