At least 16 individuals perished and in excess of 40 were wounded when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have labeled a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.

The deceased are yet to be officially identified, but investigators think their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the individuals who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She told the events leading up to the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain under care, with five in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
